Mbolombo said Anni's killing was an 'Islamic' thing - Tongo

The middleman in Shrien Dewani's alleged murder plot assumed it was Dewani's wife who needed to be killed because that was an "Islamic" thing, Tongo earlier told the high court.

Tongo said during cross-examination that he had never told middleman Monde Mbolombo that Anni Hindochi was the target.

VZ: Cell tower records show ZT was in Eeste Rivier earlier in the day.

30 Oct 2014

Went to Eeste Rivier, visited friends, mother, tried to see pastor, Qwabe - all these happened that Saturday - ZT

How odd to think that Tongo tried to see his pastor before going off to a planned murder.

30 Oct 2014

ZT: I can't recall saying to Monde the people were going to have dinner in Somerset West, or discussing money.

30 Oct 2014

VZ: SD made booking at restaurant, will tell court he agreed you'd take him there. Agreed on price of R1k. Monde concurred

30 Oct 2014

If Dewanis made a booking at 96 Winery Road restaurant in Somerset West, wonder why they ended up at a Strand restaurant instead?

30 Oct 2014

VZ prodding ZT on other plans for evening. Did he know they'd booked table at 96 Winery Road near Somerset West?

ZTNo, he never mentioned this to me. VZ: Dewani requested romantic table for 2 at 21:30 at that restaurant.

Isn't 21:30 rather late for supper?

30 Oct 2014

ZT: I said in the vehicle they must go get something to eat - this after plan failed. Can't recall earlier plans.

30 Oct 2014

VZ: Qwabe, Mngeni didn't arrive so you decided to drive on to restaurant. ZT: That is correct.

30 Oct 2014

Issue of Somerset West restaurant was Plan B after Plan A failed. - ZT

30 Oct 2014

If it makes you happy to say I am lying then you may proceed" - Tongo's standard response it seems - ZT

30 Oct 2014

ZT insists there was communication, but VZ points out this not on any phone/hotel records. "This is just a lie," VZ adds.

30 Oct 2014

ZT: Regarding make-up story, well if that makes you feel happy... there was some communication by cellphone.

30 Oct 2014

Judge interjects: Does CCTV footage show wife at the pool? VZ concedes it just shows them going to the pool.

VZ: There was no call from accused to you on Saturday morning. Was that your imagination? Make-up story?

30 Oct 2014

Another clip of SD arriving at hotel at 12:43 (real time) shown. ZT then drives off.

Judge reiterates: ZT's evidence in chief said they discussed job upon arrival at hotel, but clip shows he got out right away. Discussion took place in the motor vehicle, before arriving at hotel. But it did take place.

30 Oct 2014

VZ: What did you discuss in car on the way to change money? Earlier testimony says part of the conversation was about the job to be done.

30 Oct 2014

Anni wanted to stay behind and sunbathe while SD went to exchange money.

Issue of dollars or pounds to be exchanged resurfaces. Defence must be pretty certain he had pounds on him. Of course, ZT says he didn't see the actual exchange of money.

30 Oct 2014

Clip of SD after he left pool and changed, shown. "Notice the bulge in his left pocket," VZ says. This is the money he was to exchange.

30 Oct 2014

ZT doesn't know whether I called him or the accused texted me but there was communication

30 Oct 2014

ZT: All I know is that I picked him up between 11 and 12:00, didn't know what he had been doing, what he had in his pocket.

30 Oct 2014

VZ: SD forgot appointment with ZT, at pool with wife, when he got ZT's SMS replied, changed, took 5 000 pounds, passport.

30 Oct 2014

CCTV clip basically shows SDs walking down corridor heading for late breakfast at 11:13. They seem cheerful. They're smiling, swinging their arms, they seem carefree as they walk down the Cape Grace corridor.

30 Oct 2014

CCTV clip doesn't play, but VZ says it shows SDs emerge from hotel room, both casual. Forgot appointment with ZT.

30 Oct 2014

VZ: SD will tell court arranged to visit money changer at midday. Went for late breakfast. CCTV footage shows this.

30 Oct 2014

Confirmed those young men would be able to do the job. Exchanging money also part of discussion, as I already said... - ZT

30 Oct 2014

Call with SD to confirm things, he wanted to know whether those young men be able to do the job. - ZT

30 Oct 2014

ZT continues his testimony: I contacted Qwabe and he knew how much would be paid. It was R15 000. For him to deny that, I can't answer. The information started with Monde. I also finalised that with him.

30 Oct 2014

Apparently SD had a panic attack this morning after photographers banged their lenses against his car window. Judge Traverso appeals to the media to treat the accused with dignity.

30 Oct 2014

VZ introduces timeline based on all documentation (phone, CCTV records) Looks at Friday evening timeline.

And then court adjourns until 14:15. Tongo must certainly be relieved.

30 Oct 2014

ZT: I'm going to answer for 6th time - Monde put me in touch with these men.

His voice gets a bit deeper, more pronounced, as he becomes noticeably more frustrated with cross-examination.

30 Oct 2014

ZT: Sacrificed my life for this to happen, many troubles I went through, least was using my airtime, petrol.

30 Oct 2014

ZT: whether it was 1 or 100 men, he hired me to get killers Judge: for R15 000? ZT: correct

30 Oct 2014

VZ: In plea agreement, you mention murder his bride - did you know it was his wife at time? No, says ZT.

30 Oct 2014

VZ asks ZT to detail agreement between him, SD, and hitmen. Who would get paid what?

30 Oct 2014

ZT questions his own statement. "Who is this 'we' "? VZ: It's clearly you and Mr Mbolombo. Traverso: When you prepared your plea agreement. Did you do it with Mr da Grass? ZT: Correct

Traverso: And this was done some time after your arrest? ZT: Correct.

Traverso: Did you understand how important this document was? ZT: As I said, My Lady, at that time, my condition was weak. As time went on, I remembered.

Traverso: That wasn't my question. ZT: I understand some of them and I don't understand some of them.

30 Oct 2014

ZT: Monde was going to get his share, not sure what - this contradicts his statement - Mistakes happen, he repeats.

30 Oct 2014

Judge clarifies with ZT: Deal struck between you and SD - you the spokesman, went to Monde. ZT: That's correct.

30 Oct 2014

Monde was going to be paid by the young man, his payment didn't concern me. They'd share R15 000 between them.

30 Oct 2014

Monde was going to be paid by the young man, his payment didn't concern me. They'd share R15 000 between them.

30 Oct 2014

Judge asks about agreement regarding payment. ZT says SD was going to pay others, no money from me.

30 Oct 2014

Tongo: Contact with Monde after the incident, he enquired about his money, but I was also waiting for my money.

30 Oct 2014

VZ: I'm putting it to you that that is so improbable it can't possibly be true. ZT: That's your explanation.

30 Oct 2014

ZT: Monde knew about things happening in the community.

30 Oct 2014

VZ: Why did you think Monde would be able to put you in contact with a hitman, someone who can kill people?
