23 Jul 2015

We're closing updates now but News24's Amanda Khoza is still there and will do a wrap once matters conclude. The committee is expected to wrap up today.

Most members of the commitee seemed to at least agree that there was some ill-spending at Nkandla. However, ANC and opposition MPs disagreed on whether President Zuma had to take some measure of responsibility.

Much was said about the R1m kraal, which many MPs said was rather ordinary. Many MPs also stressed that Zuma's homestead didn't seem especially secure.

What it came down to was the question of what the R246m was spent on.

We can't sweep under the carpet the PP's recommendations - NFP

23 Jul 2015

PP has to some extent been vilified, says Singh.

23 Jul 2015

Minister of police and minister public works need to appear before committee, says Singh.

23 Jul 2015

What we lack here is all the documentation for us to make a fully informed decision, says Singh.

23 Jul 2015

IFP MP Narend Singh points out that he was advised to get security features such as bulletproof windows at his home but he decided not to. But he had to declare it. So "you're not an unwilling recipient" of security upgrades, he says.

23 Jul 2015

The PP's report must be rational, stresses ANC MP. He says it's not rational.

23 Jul 2015

Kubayi says there are suburbs in Cape Town, like Constantia, and Gauteng, like Sandton and Houghton, where there is better security than what's at Nkandla.

23 Jul 2015

Compared to all of the former heads of state's offices, that one [Nkandla] is not worth it, says ANC's Kubayi.

23 Jul 2015

The state has an obligation to look after Zuma after he leaves office, Kubayi tells committee.

23 Jul 2015

ANC's Kubayi: let's not chase one man for the sake of accountability. No basis to say "undue benefit".

23 Jul 2015

ANC MP says of the pool: It's a pool.

And of the kraal: It's just a kraal, an ordinary kraal. Nothing fancy.

23 Jul 2015

Now an ANC MP takes a swipe at Helen Zille by asking about Leeuwenhof (the official residence of the Western Cape premier).

23 Jul 2015

Yes, the committee is still going. MP says the situation has dragged on for more than five years.

23 Jul 2015

Dlakude: You DA [MPs] won't believe Mmusi sent people to do drugs at his church, but you want us to believe Zuma sent people to defraud the state at Nkandla.

23 Jul 2015

The ANC's Doris Dlakude jumps to Zuma's defence: We cant blame someone who isn't responsible, we can't mislead the public.

23 Jul 2015

Motshekga says Zuma should be left alone and those who implemented the security plan should be charged for escalating the costs.

I guess Motshekga didn't see this letter from earlier showing that Zuma authorises the building of the police chalets.

23 Jul 2015

Motshekga: The kraal was build at an appropriate place...use for ritual, communication with ancestors, burial, sacrifices...

23 Jul 2015

Motshekga: I've dealt with the visitors... er, thing.

23 Jul 2015

Motshekga says "there are schools of thought"on the pool which is sometimes called a swimming pool, sometimes a "fire pool" or just merely a "water resource".

23 Jul 2015

Motshekga: I'm happy that none of us can challenge substance of minister's report after seeing the reality on the ground at Nkandla.

23 Jul 2015

Motshekga lashes out at the media as well. He says the media misrepresented the state of the entire Nkandla village.

23 Jul 2015

Motshekga: The reality we saw on the ground at Nkandla proves that this committee would've erred if it relied solely and blindly on the protector's report.

23 Jul 2015

The ANC's Mathole Motshekga says Madonsela's report and remedial actions are not legally binding. "There are holes in the report," he says.

He calls Nhleko's report "excellent" and that he needs to come back to merely "fill in some gaps".

23 Jul 2015

And with that, the committee breaks for lunch. Back at 14:00.

23 Jul 2015

Goats are scared of rain, says Ncgobo.

Yes, that was really just said.

23 Jul 2015

ANC MP Ngcobo: The clinic is meant for the President but there is an area available for the public.

23 Jul 2015

Another ANC MP, Francois Beukman, says that what they found at Nkandla on Wednesday wasn't what was in line with what was in the report.

23 Jul 2015

MP Lindiwe Maseko speaks of a "thingynyana", making reference to Nkandla detail.

23 Jul 2015

The IFP's Moses Khubisa says it's questionable whether even a few thousand rands were spent on the cattle kraal.

23 Jul 2015

Mulder: Officials who took us around Nkandla are proud of serving SA. They looked at us like we were the bad people.

23 Jul 2015

Mulder: I will not be part of adopting the police minister's report. I was saddened to see what I saw yesterday [at Nkandla].

23 Jul 2015

Mulder: Why are there bulletproof windows and security doors if the Nkandla clinic is there to serve the public? Because it's for Zuma.

23 Jul 2015

A clearly unhappy Mulder says he doesn't want to tell the public that the R246m it already spent on security at Nkandla wasn't spent and more needs to be spent to secure Zuma at the homestead.

23 Jul 2015

Mulder: Does the scope of this committee go far enough? Maybe we should go back to the house and ask for the scope to be extended.

23 Jul 2015

The FF Plus's Corne Mulder: Did some officials decide to they had budget to build houses in KZN? No. This was a Prestige Project.

23 Jul 2015

DA MPs most aggrieved with Mahambehlala's statement that Public Protector Thuli Madonsela misled the public in her report.

23 Jul 2015

Mahambehlala: Public Works must explain to ad hoc commitee. What went wrong? Work at Nkandla must resume.

23 Jul 2015

I find no basis the President must pay whatever portion just for fun. Because there's no evidence he unduly benefited - Mahambehlala

23 Jul 2015

Mahambehlala: He's a State president. He has a right to security.

23 Jul 2015

Our President is open to vultures. Our President is vulnerable. I haven't seen anything security there, says ANC MP Tandi Mahambehlala.

23 Jul 2015

The committee has resumed.

An ANC MP is now speaking baout the kraal. She says it was an ordinary kraal and she was expecting a "sophisticated kraal with air conditioning".

23 Jul 2015

Singh: We need to find out if at any stage the president was involved and aware of the costs.

23 Jul 2015

Singh: There are many laughing all the way to the bank because they've made so much money out of Nkandla.

23 Jul 2015

Singh: We must allow for cost escalation in rural areas. But people took undue advantage by raising costs in Nkandla.

23 Jul 2015

The IFP's Narend Singh is now addressing the committee. There's a clinic nearby so Zuma's one was not built for the community. It was built for his family, Singh says.
