Lili to remain in custody until bail application

Cape Town - The State will be opposing bail when the application is heard in the inciting of violence case against "poo protester" Andile Lili on Wednesday.

Lili, 40, appeared before Magistrate Cyril Krautz in the Bellville Magistrate’s court on Friday morning.

Asking that bail be denied, the State's Peter John Damon cited the seriousness of the offence and the fact that the statements were made outside the court gates while Lili was out on bail after dumping human faeces at the Cape Town International Airport two years ago.

Lili was arrested on Wednesday night following his alleged remarks that criminals should be "killed immediately and brutally".

Lili, an ANC provincial executive member and leader of the Ses'khona People's Rights Movement, appeared in the same court where he appeared on Tuesday with his eight co-accused in the poo-throwing incident.

The group had earlier been found guilty of contravening the Civil Aviation Act in February.

A convoy of police vehicles were parked outside the Bellville Magistrate's Court in case there was "any drama", an officer told News24.

By 10:30, about 50 people had gathered outside the court, with about 20 more inside the courtroom.

Ses'khona People's Rights Movement spokesperson Sulyman Stellenboom told News24 their members had gathered at the Cape Town Magistrate's Court after they were incorrectly informed Lili would be appearing in the city.

Lili remains in custody until his next appearance.
