Limpopo motorists warned to avoid R71 after protests

Cape Town - Protests in the Limpopo town of Namakgale continued on Wednesday morning, with roads being blocked and at least one vehicle being set alight, provincial police said.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Ronel Otto said hundreds of community members were taking part in the protest action in the area, which she described as “volatile and tense”.

“Last [Tuesday] night the R71 was blocked again and several vehicles were damaged by people throwing stones.

“One vehicle was also set alight.”

Otto said the road was still blocked although police and traffic officers were attempting to clear it.

Motorists should rather avoid the area if they could, Otto said.

Reports had also been received of spaza shops being looted and burnt, but this could not be verified as roads inside the villages were blocked and police were unable to access the areas.

Otto said it was unclear what the protests were about, as police had received word that locals were unhappy about a lack of speed bumps, traditional leaders and employment at local mines.
