Cape Town - The postal strike has caused the delay of many a package but the arrival of a love letter written in 1964 from a suitor in Orkney to his sweetheart in Cape Town takes the meaning of snail mail to another level.
The suitor, whose name is unclear, sent the note from Orkney in the then Transvaal and said he had asked for Val van Schoor’s parents’ permission to marry her, the Cape Argus reports.
But because the letter was only delivered last week and landed in the flat of Julius du Toit in Sea Point, it is unclear if Van Schoor and her beau ever walked the aisle.
The four-page letter’s envelope had a postal stamp of just 3c.
Van Schoor’s beloved tells her that it is well past midnight and that he had just spent the last “nerve-wracking hour composing a two page letter to your folks”.
In January last year, a father and son in Pringle Bay in the Western Cape picked up a bottle with a message that had been written by the captain of a submarine in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
Commodore Darren White, captain of the SAS Charlotte Maxeke, had thrown the bottle into the ocean, the Cape Times reported.
"I kept a wine bottle from a function we had while alongside in Argentina. I typed out the message, put a picture of the crew with it and put it in a plastic sleeve in a bottle," White said.
