Pietermaritzburg - KwaZulu-Natal community safety MEC Willies Mchunu on Wednesday condemned the killing of chairperson of the Dube clan Hendrick Phila Mahlawula.
Mahlawula, 46, of Mpembeni, eMabuyeni (Empangeni), was killed when a group of people opened fire on his car using high-calibre weapons on Friday sometime between 17:00 and 19:00.
"Mahlawula, who was coming from an event that was graced by the presence of the first lady, Ma Khumalo [President Jacob Zuma's first wife] and KwaZulu-Natal first lady and mayor of uThungulu councillor Thembeka Mchunu, was shot and killed while travelling in his Toyota Hilux," Mchunu's office said in a statement.
No arrests had been made and the motive for the killing was unknown.
Mchunu urged people to co-operate with police to ensure those responsible were caught.
He urged locals not to take the law into their own hands.
He said he was confident police would rapidly get to the bottom of the shooting. Mchunu sent his condolences to Mahlawula's family.
