M&G sad to see Quintal leave: CEO

Johannesburg - The Mail & Guardian was sad to see its editor Angela Quintal leave the publication after spending two years in the position, CEO Hoosain Karjieker said on Monday.

"Angela brought a level of calmness into the newsroom with her pragmatic management style and approach, and we value her contribution immensely," he said.

"We are sad to see her leave."

Quintal handed in her resignation on Monday, saying she wanted to pursue other interests.

On her Facebook profile, Quintal said: "After two years in the hot seat, I have resigned as editor of the M&G. Do I have another job? No, but sometimes one needs to do crazy things. So I've done it."

She was appointed editor in July 2013. She had left her position as The Witness editor to take up the position.

The publication's deputy editor Moshoeshoe Monare would act in the position until a new editor was appointed.

Karjieker said Quintal had brought stability to the newsroom during a difficult period.

The weakening economy had impacted on the business models in the media industry, which had resulted in staff reduction and retrenchments of journalists across the sector, he said.
