MP ‘will lay assault charges’ after being forcibly removed from Parliament

Parliament’s newly appointed security guards have been threatened with a case of assault after they were called in for the first time yesterday to remove an “unruly” member of Parliament from the National Council of Provinces. (Starts at 49:49)

The scuffle wasn’t as dramatic as the chaos at President Jacob Zuma’s state of the nation address in February, but the security guards’ struggle against Economic Freedom Fighters MP Tebogo Mokwele left her with minor injuries.

Mokwele had proposed a point of order but was completely ignored.

“I asked to talk, probably for 10 minutes. I wanted to address the speaker about the horrible language of ANC MPs. I was requested to leave the house, and I refused,” she said later.

Mokwele was forcibly removed from the house. She alleged that her left arm, foot and eye were injured in the process.

“They turned my arm tightly and held it while making me walk out. One of the officials stood on my food and nearly took out my left eye with his finger.”

The session was suspended for nearly 30 minutes before resuming again.

Mokwele said she would lay charges of assault with the police.

“I am going to consult with my colleagues on a plan of action.”
