Madonsela: I won't stand for president

Durban - Public Protector Thuli Madonsela says whether the country has a male or female president doesn't matter to her.

"I want a president who will expand the frontiers of freedom, justice and constitutionalism in this country," she said.

Madonsela was speaking at the University of KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.

Asked if she would stand for president she said, "No, I am not even ready to be a politician. I am happy to do what I can in civil society."

She said as the public protector, she had instead always gravitated towards ensuring justice.

However, Madonsela went on to say that she had always believed that women since "the time of Charlotte Maxeke and Olive Schreiner" were competent.

"They always knew what society needed. These two women tackled presidents. Charlotte Maxeke at the height of apartheid told the presidents that she wanted to meet with him because she wanted to see justice for women in the courts and in the prisons.

"She didn't do it for herself; she didn't want to be the president. She wanted to make a difference."
