Magistrate to give reasons for denying Panayiotou bail

Port Elizabeth - Magistrate Abigail Beeton is expected to provide her reasons at the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court on Friday for denying murder-accused Christopher Panayiotou bail.

Panayiotou, who is accused of murdering his wife Jayde Panayiotou, was denied bail on June 5.

“The court's finding is that the applicant has failed to show exceptional circumstances. Bail is refused,” Beeton said at the time.

She said it was unusual to wait to provide reasons but she decided on this approach as there had already been many delays and bail, by its nature, was an urgent application.

Beeton considered the murder a Schedule 6 offence, which made it harder for Panayiotou to get bail.

Jayde disappeared on April 21 after last being seen outside her home waiting for a lift to the school where she taught. Her body was later found in an isolated area in KwaNobuhle, outside Uitenhage, and her husband was arrested on April 29 for her murder.

He faces charges of conspiracy to commit murder, murder‚ kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances and defeating the ends of justice.

Two others, Thando Siyoli, 31, and Sizwezakhe Vumazonke, 30, were also arrested for the school teacher's murder.

Siyoli has turned State witness and may get immunity.

Both will appear again on June 19.
