Malema to lay charges against Ramaphosa

Johannesburg - EFF leader Julius Malema on Friday intends to lay criminal charges against Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa for his alleged role in the violence and deaths at Marikana.

"The reason we are opening a case against Ramaphosa is because it is only through criminal investigations that a proper and thorough investigation which is... detailed can be conducted," he told reporters in Johannesburg on Thursday.

This was despite the Farlam Commission of Inquiry clearing Ramaphosa of any role in the deaths.

"The Commission is of the view that it cannot be said that Mr Ramaphosa was the 'cause of the massacre'," its report states.

The Economic Freedom Fighters however believe Ramaphosa had a hand in the decisions taken on August 16, 2012, when police shot dead 34 striking mineworkers at Lonmin's mine in Marikana, North West.

It believed Ramaphosa exerted political pressure on then police minister Nathi Mthethwa to end the strike.

Malema said his party would lay criminal charges against Ramaphosa and Mthethwa in Marikana.
