Malema's car 'wrongfully' bought - report

Johannesburg - Economic Freedom Fighters members are claiming that a grey Golf GTI was "wrongfully" bought for leader Julius Malema using party money, City Press reported on Sunday.

The car was reportedly bought late last year using money from the EFF's main bank account, however records showed that the party did not own the car.

The newspaper said an invoice for R377 500 for a grey Golf GTI Edition 35 DSG with 25 000km on the clock was made out to the EFF HQ on 3 September from a dealership in Polokwane.

It was paid on 8 September to the dealership from an EFF account.

Instead of being registered as an official EFF car, it was registered in the name of a private company, Voorsprong Trading and Projects, whose active director is Jimmy Matlebyane, a 22-year-old student from Seshego. The previous director was another student Tebatso Malema, understood to be Malema's cousin.

When the paper contacted Matlebyane he confirmed he was a director of the company and that the Golf was his. When asked if it was bought with EFF funds he hung up.

Tebatso Malema denied a relationship with Julius Malema.

EFF spokesman Fana Mokoena confirmed the facts around the purchase of the car, saying it was for "transporting EFF VIPs".

He said it would be re-registered to the EFF.
