Cape Town - A 68-year-old man has died and two men have been arrested after protest action turned violent in the Phillipi East area on Wednesday night, Western Cape police said.

A municipal building, five trucks, and four bakkies were set alight during the protest, Western Cape police and the City of Cape Town's Fire and Rescue Services told News24.
Fire and Rescue spokesperson Theo Layne said three cars were also set alight during the protest.
Layne said the fire department responded at around 22:00 on Wednesday night, and had to be escorted by police to assist in the embattled area before extinguishing the fires.
Murder
The protest also moved to the N2, where a Toyota Hilux was stoned, Lieutenant Colonel Andrè Traut told News24.
“The passenger, a 68-year-old male, was struck with a brick, and en-route to the hospital, he succumbed.
“The circumstances are being investigated and a murder case has been registered.”
The situation is still being monitored by police, and has been described as "tense".
Arrests
Two male suspects have been arrested for stoning police vehicles, and will face public violence charges.
It was still unclear on Thursday what the protest was about, but it could possibly be service delivery related, Traut said.
No injuries were reported in the fires, Layne added.
Public violence case dockets have been registered and are under investigation.
