Johannesburg - A man has died and two other people were injured when two cars collided in Wentworth, Durban, paramedics said on Monday.

"Paramedics assessed the scene and found that a young gentleman was thrown from the wreckage and was in a critical condition," said Rescue Care spokesperson Garrith Jamieson.

"Advanced Life Support intervention was needed to stabilise the injured male as he had suffered multiple injuries."

The man was placed on a manual ventilator before being taken to King Edward Hospital for further treatment.

However, the man died shortly after arriving at hospital.

"A further two people were stabilised on the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital for further care," Jamieson said.

The accident happened around 07:00 on Sunday at the intersection of Quality Street and Chamberlain Road in Wentworth.

The cause of the accident was unknown.

Police were investigating.
