Man killed in Durban lift accident

Durban - A 20-year-old man was killed in Durban on Monday when the goods elevator in which he was working fell, police said.

Colonel Jay Naicker said an inquest docket had been opened.

"It is alleged that today at approximately 11:00 a 20-year-old man was in a goods lift in a supermarket where he was working when it fell."

The incident took place at the Hypercheck Supermarket in Durban's Prince Edward Street.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said that according to paramedics at the scene the man was crushed to death when he was caught in the lift doors.

"Rescue services had to break open the elevator doors to free the trapped man's body.

"Witnesses on scene said they had gone to investigate after hearing the man's screams," said Meiring.
