Port Elizabeth - A group of people protested outside the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on Monday ahead of the appearance of a family member linked to the abduction and killing of teacher Jayde Panayiotou.
Members of the DA Women’s Network (DAWN) held up placards calling for justice, stating: “Justice for Jayde” and “DA stands for justice”.
Celeste Barker, an MPL, said DAWN was present to show solidarity with the victim’s family.
Another bystander held up a board calling for no bail for the 28-year-old man who is set to appear.
He cannot be named until he appears.
The courtroom was packed with a strong media contingent.
The head of the Nelson Mandela Bay Ratepayer’s Association, Kobus Gerber, stood in court holding a miniature gallows (a wooden frame with a noose attached to the end). In his other hand, he held a red placard stating: “Mr Zuma, we’ve had ENOUGH”.
He was apparently asked to leave the room.
The Times Media Group was successful in its application to allow cameras inside, but could only take photographs while the court was not in session.
Jayde Panayiotou was abducted outside her Kabega Park home on Tuesday, April 21, while waiting for her lift to the school where she worked. She was later found dead on the outskirts of a township in Uitenhage.
Two people have been arrested in connection with her abduction and murder, which appeared to have been deliberate.
One of them, Thando Siyoli, 31, appeared in the same court on Thursday. Details had emerged that a substantial amount of money was allegedly paid to kill her.
