Mandela bust unveiled at City Hall in Cape Town

Cape Town - A bust of late former president Nelson Mandela has been unveiled in Cape Town on Monday as part of Freedom Day celebrations in the city.

The bust will stand close to the spot where Mandela gave his first speech at City Hall in Cape Town after his release from Victor Verster prison in 1990, Eyewitness News reported on Monday.

The sculptor, Bill Davis, completed the bust of Nelson Mandela while battling cancer.

Cape Town mayor Patricia De Lille and anti-Apartheid struggle stalwart Ahmed Kathrada were present at the unveiling at City Hall.

In Pretoria, meanwhile, President Jacob Zuma said that South Africa’s transition into democracy has been a successful one.

Speaking at a Freedom Day event at the Union Buildings on Monday, the president said on this day, the country reflected on the progress made in extending basic services to South Africa's people.

"Millions of people now have access to education, healthcare and water which they did not have in 1994,” Zuma said.

“We continue to explore ways to improve quality education. We continue to implement programs which will lead to economic freedom."
