Manhunt on for KZN cop implicated in murder

Durban - A police detective from Pinetown implicated in the murder of a Durban businesswoman is on the run.

A Provincial Task Team has thrown out a wide dragnet for the officer, who has now found himself on the other side of the law.

The policeman cannot be named until an arrest warrant is issued.

He is wanted for his alleged role in the murder of Nalini Naidoo, who was found dead with her throat cut near the Shongweni Dam at Nkwalini last October.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker confirmed that the case and the pursuit of the officer, the latest instalment in a dramatic tale of murder, was being dealt with at the highest level.

“We won't tolerate criminal elements within the police and any member who is accused of being involved in crime will be arrested and will face the full might of the law,” he said.

Naidu’s husband Seelan, himself a former policeman, appeared in the Durban Magistrates Court on Monday, accused of planning his wife’s murder.

He had handed himself over to the investigations team and is being held at the Durban North Police Station.

Three people were arrested and charged for murder and kidnapping in the weeks following the discovery of her body.

Gcina Magwaza, 39, Zwelakhe Maphumulo, 41, and Kholekile Sithole, 41, were each convicted and sentenced to 45 years for murder and kidnapping.

The police officer now on the run is understood to have organised the band of hitmen.

Naicker said that Seelan Naidu had in the past been found guilty of trying to have his wife killed.

She had reportedly forgiven him and testified on his behalf, which led to him receiving correctional supervision and a four-year suspended sentence for her attempted murder in 2006.

In that attack she was shot four to five times while dropping off her youngest son at school.
