Mathunjwa receives rousing welcome in Marikana

Rustenburg - Amcu president Joseph Mathunjwa arrived to a rousing welcome at the Nkaneng informal settlement in Wonderkop near Marikana in North West on Saturday.

A crowd of about 12 000 rose and sang the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (Amcu) leader's praises.

Mathunjwa, EFF leader Julius Malema and DA parliamentary leader Mmusi Maimane were expected to address the crowd.

Saturday marked two years since the police opened fire on striking mineworkers, killing 34 of them.

Ten other people, including two police officers and two security guards were killed in strike-related violence in the preceding week.

Well I suppose he does deserve a rousing welcome, considering how foolishness is celebrated this part of the world

Well in 2017 there will only be 4000 of that crowd and NO, not because the other 8000 would have gone on pension or they would have found better paying jobs, it will be because of this Mathunjwa character and his lack of vision. Tell me; Of his 4 luxury BMWs which one was he driving today? Of the 4 houses he owns, was he coming from the 4 Star B&B he owns or that R4 Mil house? Wake up and smell the coffee you people, it will be your kids that will be having an unemployed father when this shady character is done with you. Now for the #ThumbsDown brigade

I don't condone the fact that people were killed in Marikana but I think the whole Marikana issue is not handled right. The strikers are not blamed for the people, including two policemen and two security guards, who died earlier. The traditional healer who made rituals and told the people to go straight to the police is not blamed.

Who made these bloated unrealistic promises of R12500 in order to attract members (and their fees) to his union? Who led them out to an illegal strike? Who lost control of his members? Beside him, Which other person on that stage told miners to fight, take, kill, and be prepared to die for R12500? Have either ever taken responsibility for misrepresenting their true objectives at Marikana (and other mines in the area), and for having taken advantage of the miners poor comprehension of economic viability? Sorry, NOT A HERO. NOT BY A LONG LONG WAY. Hopefully they too get asked the hard questions at the commission, and Dali isn't just there to conduct the circuc in order to protect them. The truth about what occured on that fateful day, is that each and every person on the ground at the time, and those who had visited the area in the weeks building up to it, those who sat in offices and not interveiened (incl Vavi, why didn't he use his "vast" knowledge to advise on the matter?), management, police, union leaders, the miners, their families, shop stewards, political oppourtunists, ministers of the relevant portfolios, media, etc etc are ALL responsible in part. Just stand up, say 'I' and then let's focus on cleaning up, making sure whatever lessons learnt are included in new procedure & policies, and then move forward together.
