Welkom - A methane explosion at a mine shaft near Welkom caused chaos in the Free State city on Saturday evening, Netwerk24 reports.
Police spokesperson Constable Ketabile Mofokeng said the explosion had happened next to an Eskom sub-station behind the traffic department and they’d initially thought that the sub-station had blown up.
However, police later told Netwerk24 that it was, in fact, a methane explosion.
