Metro cop hit by car at KZN accident scene

Durban - A metro police officer is recovering in a Durban hospital after he was hit by a car and seriously injured at an accident scene in Umhlanga on Sunday night.

It is understood that the officer had been dispatched to an accident scene when a secondary collision occurred.

Crisis Medical spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said that two cars had collided on the M4 Ruth First Freeway near Umhlanga late on Sunday night.

“Eyewitnesses allege one of the vehicles collided into the rear of the other at high speed causing the driver of one of the cars to be ejected from his vehicle,” he said.

“He sustained spinal cord injuries and was treated on scene by Crisis Medical advanced life support paramedics before being transported through to a nearby hospital for further care. The driver of the second vehicle suffered moderate injuries only.”

While emergency service personnel were attending to the scene another accident occurred, which saw the metro police officer struck by a car which careered through the scene.

“A light motor vehicle failed to yield for the collision, ploughing through the scene, knocking over a man before smashing into a tow truck, leaving a 35-year-old man with serious injuries,” Van Reenen added.

“He was treated on scene before being taken through to hospital for further care. He remains in a serious but stable condition. The driver of the vehicle sustained minor injuries,” he said.
