Metro police: Calm restored in Ennerdale

Johannesburg - Ennerdale, south of Johannesburg, was quiet on Monday afternoon following service delivery protests by residents earlier, metro police said.

"It is calm at the moment," said Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

Arrests for public violence had been made but he could not confirm the number.

A crowd had protested in the area on Monday morning over the sewerage system, Minnaar said.

"Traffic had to be diverted along the Golden Highway and the R550."

The Star reported that rubber bullets and teargas were fired at protesters.

Protesters allegedly stoned police officers and their vehicles, and started veld fires.

They also barricaded roads with rocks, according to the newspaper.

Minnaar could not confirm the report.
