Pretoria - All the injured from the Meyerton bus crash have been taken to various hospitals after their bus hit the rails of a bridge and plummeted 10m to the ground.

At least 19 people were killed on Monday morning when the Putco bus plummeted off a bridge after the bus driver apparently lost control of the vehicle.

ER24 spokesperson Vanessa Jackson said the bus was carrying about 70 people of "working age".

After more than five hours working on the scene to free people from the wreckage, rescue personnel eventually lifted the bus from the scene.

Jackson said the injured were rushed to different hospitals in the greater Vaal region, while the critically injured were airlifted to the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.
