Muizenberg train fire arson case opened

Cape Town- Police are investigating a case of arson following a train fire at Muizenberg station on Thursday night.

"Three minors have been arrested and were subsequently released to the custody of their parents," Metrorail spokesperson Riana Scott said on Friday.

However, Western Cape police spokesperson Lt Col Andre Traut said no-one had been arrested as yet.

“The circumstances are being investigated and an arson case has been registered,” he said.

Scott said four carriages were damaged around 18:00.

Insurance assessors would calculate the cost of the damage.

A board of inquiry and a police investigation would determine the cause of the fire, she said.

“No commuter injuries were reported, but two of our train crew were treated for smoke inhalation.”

Scott said the latest damage brought to 10 the number of carriages lost to fire in the province this year.
