Durban - A municipal official is among three suspects arrested on Friday for the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition after police raided a number of houses in the Kranskop area in KwaZulu-Natal.
These arrests are the latest following a number of raids in the area in the fight against illegal firearms, said police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane.
"Since April 13, police conducted a number of firearm raidings in the Kranskop and the surrounding areas and recovered a total of 20 unlicensed firearms and arrested a total of ten suspects.
“Recovered firearms include AK47 rifles, 303 rifles, shotguns and 9mm pistols.
"The last arrest was made on Friday, April 24 when Kranskop members assisted by National Intervention Unit raided few houses at KwaMxosa and Mabomvini area for illegal firearms."
‘Root out criminals’
Three suspects including a municipal official were arrested during these operations and were found in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
All three suspects - aged between 41 and 49 -are due to appear in the Kranskop Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
“I want to assure the community that we will continue to root out criminals in our society and will continue to tighten the screws on criminals.
“We will continue with such operations with the support from the community who give us valuable information about illegal firearms in their areas,” said KZN Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni.
The recovered firearms will be taken to ballistics to ascertain if they were used in any commission of the crime in the country.
