Durban - National Freedom Party president Zanele kaMagwaza-Msibi may be discharged from hospital next week, after spending last week in ICU.
The Witness understands that the deputy minister of science and technology underwent surgery last week.
The NFP held a special prayer rally on Sunday in Ulundi for her speedy recovery.
Blood clots
Sources said kaMagwaza-Msibi will be transferred to an ordinary ward this week after a successful operation to remove blood clots.
The Witness previously reported the NFP leader suffered an apparent stroke in her Ulundi home last Sunday.
KaMagwaza-Msibi, 52, reportedly collapsed while getting dressed in her bedroom and was taken to MediClinic in Newcastle in a critical condition. She was reportedly transferred to eThekwini Hospital, but the hospital denied this.
“She will be moved from ICU into an ordinary ward this week. Although she is not moving she responds when we speak to her. She smiles, she has improved dramatically,” said a source who asked to remain anonymous.
Improvement
Another source said they were surprised by kaMagwaza-Msibi’s improvement after last week’s bleak prognosis.
“Doctors had predicted a 30% [chance of survival]. We are glad she is improving,” said the source.
KaMagwaza-Msibi’s spokesperson Canaan Mdletshe confirmed that she was doing well.
KaMagwaza-Msibi shot to fame when she broke away from the Inkatha Freedom Party and formed the NFP in 2011. She served as Zululand District mayor for 15 years before she was appointed deputy minister.
