Nelson Mandela returns to Qunu

Johannesburg - Former president Nelson Mandela has returned to his hometown of Qunu in the Eastern Cape, the presidency said on Tuesday.

"The presidency requests that the privacy of Madiba and his family be respected during this period," spokesperson Mac Maharaj said in a statement.

He said Mandela had stayed at his Houghton home in Johannesburg for the past few months, while his house in Qunu was refurbished.

On Monday, President Jacob Zuma said Mandela was in good health.

"We constantly assure him of the love, support and good wishes of millions of South Africans and people around the world."

Zuma said Mandela resided at both residences interchangeably, depending on his wishes at any particular time.

"He has indicated his wish to go back to Qunu at this point," Zuma said.
