New details emerge in burnt body case

Durban - A burning car found with a body in the boot in Durban North on Thursday night, had been reported stolen in 2014, police have said.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane confirmed that detectives were probing the links between the stolen car and the charred human remains discovered within.

“Our initial investigation from the scene established that the vehicle was stolen during a house robbery on August 25, 2014 in Sydenham. The suspects approached the victim, 51, at her house and demanded the car keys. They took the vehicle and drove off.

"A case of house robbery was opened at Sydenham Saps for investigation and no arrests have been made," he said.

Turning to Thursday’s grisly find, Zwane said too little was known at this stage to draw concrete conclusions.

“An unknown body was found inside the boot and the motive for the killing is unknown. A case of murder was opened at Greenwood Park for investigation and no arrests have been made,” Zwane said.

News24 earlier reported that medics had been called to the scene in Malacca Road after residents reported a vehicle was ablaze.

“We arrived and found that the car was still well alight and eThekwini Metro firefighters who had arrived managed to douse the blaze.”

“On searching the car, our personnel found human remains in the boot of the vehicle which had been burnt beyond recognition. So extensive were the burns that we have been unable to establish whether or not the body was male or female,” he said.
