Johannesburg - A newborn baby was found alive in a toilet at a taxi rank in Pietermaritzburg on Wednesday morning, paramedics said.
Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann said people in the area found the baby at the toilets opposite the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg.
Paramedics who were summoned removed the baby girl and after assessing her and clothing her found that she was in a stable condition.
Steinmann said the baby was estimated to be a few hours old.
She was taken to a hospital.
"Baby is doing well," she said.
Police would take over with an investigation into where
her mother is and the circumstances of her being left in the toilet.
