Nine dead on Western Cape roads at the weekend

Cape Town - Nine people died on Western Cape roads at the weekend and numerous arrests were made at various roadblocks.

A motorcyclist, driver and passenger died in separate incidents on Friday, said provincial traffic chief Kenny Africa.

Six people, three of them pedestrians, were killed on Saturday.

Africa said 25 people were arrested for drunk driving in the province over the last two days.

The highest recorded blood alcohol level was in Knysna, where a man was tested on Saturday night and found to be around six times over the legal limit.

He was expected to appear in the Knysna Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

The highest speed infringements were recorded on the N2.

In Mossel Bay, a motorist was caught on the driving 174km/h in a 120km/h zone, while in Caledon, a motorist drove 147km/h in a 100km/h zone.

Africa warned motorists to take care returning from their long weekend travels on Sunday and Monday.

“People need to take note of the fact that we will be having road blocks tonight and we are taking a no-nonsense approach,” he said.
