Nkandla architect's case postponed

Johannesburg - The SIU's civil claim against Nkandla architect Minenhle Makhanya was postponed in the KwaZulu-Natal High Court in Pietermaritzburg on Monday, SABC news reported.

The case would be heard on 25 February.

The Special Investigating Unit's (SIU) claim against Makhanya relates to work done at President Jacob Zuma's homestead in KwaZulu-Natal.

Makhanya and the department of public works face a R155m civil claim relating to Nkandla.

In its final report on the Nkandla upgrades, the SIU alleges Makhanya authorised the construction of structures which were not security measures.

As a result of his "wrongful, unlawful and negligent conduct", R68 506 106 was paid to service providers for work that fell outside what the police and defence force recommended.

According to Public Protector Thuli Madonsela’s report he made R16.5m from the project.

The SIU concluded that the best way of recovering the state funds misspent on the project was to claim it from him, in contrast with Madonsela's finding that Zuma was liable to pay a portion of the cost.

"Makhanya inter alia increased the scope and extent of the works by designing and authorising items that were not required for security purposes," the SIU said in the report, tabled in Parliament in September last year.
