Nkandla contractor excused from court

Johannesburg - Fraud-accused Durban building contractor, Thandeka Nene, who was involved in work on Nkandla, missed a court appearance this week, the Sunday Independent reported.

Nene's attorney produced a sick note in the Durban Commercial Crime Court on Friday stating that following her mother's murder earlier this month, Nene was being treated by a psychiatrist for acute stress disorder.

The businesswoman, currently out on bail, is facing fraud and corruption charges related to work by two construction companies. The first is Bonalena Construction, of which she is the sole member, and the second Ntshantsha Construction.

Nene is one of four directors of Ntshantsha Construction, along with her husband, sister, and brother-in-law. All are facing fraud charges.

The charges relate to work done in building schools and a hospital, and not to work on President Jacob Zuma's Nkandla homestead.

She is accused of exaggerating her experience as a builder to win government tenders worth R118m, and of bribing a public works official.

The funeral of Nene's mother, who was murdered at her Nagina home near Marianhill, KwaZulu-Natal, was held on Saturday.

The case has been postponed until January.
