No arrest following alleged rape of 4-year-old

Durban - No arrest has been made following the alleged rape of a four-year-old girl in Verulam at the weekend, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Tuesday.

"We can confirm that the Phoenix family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit is investigating the case of rape, kidnapping and attempted murder which happened on Saturday," Major Thulani Zwane said.

The girl was found hanging from a tree after she was allegedly raped in Waterloo, Verulam, on Saturday morning.

She was taken from her home at around 05:30 on Saturday morning, after her grandmother had apparently left to visit someone in the area, Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) told News24 at the time.

The suspect had cut up a blanket and allegedly tried to hang the child.

She was found alive after her grandmother launched a search party for her.

The man allegedly ran into the bush when he saw the grandmother approaching.

Rusa said the girl knew the alleged rapist.
