Johannesburg - There have been no arrests yet in connection with the Pretoria East robbery of economist Dawie Roodt and his family, Gauteng police said on Sunday.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Katlego Mogale said the investigation was still continuing.
On Thursday night, Roodt and his family – wife Marina, their twin toddlers and Roodt’s adult daughter - were confronted by four armed men.
Roodt is currently in intensive care after he was hit with a panga during the robbery. While the robbery was in progress, there was a power failure in the area and Roodt used the opportunity to try and draw the robbers away from his family by saying he had money in his vehicle in the garage.
Once one of the men followed him to the garage, Roodt attacked him. During the attack, the assailant hit and cut Roodt with a panga multiple times. He sustained arm and head injuries.
The other robbers panicked because of the noise and fled the property with the stolen goods, including laptops and handbags.
Roodt eventually jumped the fence and ran to his neighbour for help, before returning to his home.
