Johannesburg - A Sharpville man accused of bestiality and animal cruelty after allegedly sexually assaulting and strangling a goat to death, was denied bail in the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
The man will remain in police custody until his next court appearance on July 29, the Vereeniging SPCA said in a statement.
He is facing charges of bestiality and animal cruelty for sexually assaulting and strangling the goat to death on June 19. He was allegedly caught in the act by members of the community.
The man told the court he was in hospital for almost a week because members of the community assaulted him. He denied raping the goat.
The State and SPCA strongly opposed the bail application.
Protesters supporting the Vereeniging SPCA were present outside the court house with posters and banners protesting "this unspeakable act of bestiality and animal cruelty", the statement said.
The DNA results were still pending.
