Nobody influenced Griekwastad teen - judge

Kimberley - The Griekwastad farm murderer was not used by anybody else or influenced by anybody to commit the Steenkamp murders, Northern Cape Judge President Frans Kgomo said on Wednesday.

Kgomo sentenced the 17-year-old to 20 years imprisonment for each of the three murder convictions, 12 years on a rape conviction and four years for lying to the police. All sentences would run concurrently.

"DD [has] shown no remorse," said Kgomo in referring to the teen.

"I am satisfied that he was not influenced by anybody else in committing the crimes."

Kgomo said the teen had even falsely implicated others in his explanation of possible reasons for what happened on the Steenkamp farm on the night of the murders.

On 27 March, the court found the boy guilty of the murders of Griekwastad farmer Deon Steenkamp, 44, his wife Christel, 43, and their daughter Marthella, 14.

They were shot dead on their farm Naauwhoek on 6 April 2012.

The boy was also found guilty of raping the girl and lying to the police.

A Total Travesty of Justice - Concurrent sentences should be outlawed - he should do a min of 60 years ++++ with no possibility of parole - since when did taking a life mean 20 years and parole after 10 years - we are completely missing the plot here in SA- Yoiu get the same sentence for hate speech - when we start getting our act together

Shocking its ok then to wipe you family out as you get 12 years in jail at worst travesty of justice I would say. He should have got life in prison for his crime.

So he is now 17, he has been sentenced to 20 years, I reckon he will get one third off for good behaviour, thus he will be 31 (or thereabouts) when he is released? Why do the courts insist on having sentences run concurrently instead of consecutively? The learned Judged himself says that this murdering rapist has shown no remorse and has falsely implicated other persons and lied to the Police. Why did the sentences for at least the rape (perpetrated by the accused on his own sister!) and that for lying to the police not be held to run CONSECUTIVELY! This pathetic excuse for a human not so long ago would have been sentenced to death!
