Johannesburg - Nine people have died in accidents in North West since the start of the year, the provincial community safety and transport department said on Monday.
A motorist died on New Year's Day when he lost control of his vehicle 10km outside Schweizer-Reneke, said spokesperson Shuping Daddy Sebolecwe.
Another motorist died in Ventersdorp when he lost control of his vehicle along the N4.
"In the Mabieskraal area, police are also investigating a case of culpable homicide after an 8-year-old was hit by a car on the same Thursday in Tweelagte," said Sebolecwe.
Two men and two women, aged between 33 and 40, died when their Toyota Condor veered out of control and overturned in Ottosdal on Friday.
Sebolecwe said police information was that the car was travelling from Delareyville to Ottosdal. Three passengers were taken to hospital.
Another two people died when their car collided with a truck on the R24 near Rustenburg, also on Friday.
"It is alleged that the driver of the vehicle lost control after a tyre burst and collided with [an] oncoming truck," said Sebolecwe.
Three people were seriously injured. The truck driver was unhurt.
Community Safety and Transport MEC Gaoage Molapisi sent his condolences to the families of those killed.
Molapisi said it was tragic that despite efforts taken to decrease road deaths, hundreds of people continued to lose their lives.
"Though we seem to have a reduction of deaths on our roads compared to last year, a loss of a human soul is hurtful," he said.
He urged those returning home from their holidays to
travel safely.
