Nyanga protests not political - Ehrenreich

Cape Town - City of Cape Town opposition leader Tony Ehrenreich accused mayor Patricia de Lille of trying to politicise a service delivery protest in Nyanga on Monday morning.

Protesters set buses alight and assaulted 11 bus drivers. A taxi driver was also shot and killed at the time of the protests, which De Lille said was an attempt to make the city ungovernable.

Ehrenreich denied this, saying the ANC condemned violence without reservation.

“This is no doubt a complex issue that needs to be analysed, so that we can find solutions and fix the challenges.

“Drivers are claiming that they are protesting because they are not paid properly and owners are treating them badly.

“So why are they burning buses, when the only people who benefit from burning buses are the [taxi] owners who have to transport the people who used to travel on buses,” said Ehrenreich.

“Why are taxi drivers attacking bus drivers and assaulting them when they are their colleagues? Why are taxi drivers stoning people at taxi ranks when they don’t gain anything from hurting people from their communities?

“There is a complex situation at play that requires urgent resolutions that provide safe and reliable transport to commuters and we should not aggravate the situation by seeing all kinds of ungovernable ghosts at work."
