'Old matric' exams probed after cheating allegations

Durban - The basic education department will investigate matric examinations for adult students in KwaZulu-Natal, after irregularities were uncovered.

According to the department, the irregularities were picked up after an audit was carried out on answer scripts from 95 examination centres.

"This was prompted by examination irregularities that were detected jointly by the DBE [department of basic education] and KwaZulu-Natal education department and confirmed by the Quality Assurance Council, Umalusi," the department said.

The investigation will affect those who wrote the so-called "old matric" that has been offered to adult students since 2008.

According to the department, there were reports that those writing the examinations were receiving assistance from invigilators during the exam.

An audit of examination papers at 95 out of a total of 365 examination centres revealed "that there has been orchestrated support provided to candidates at certain centres in the province during the writing of the 2014 Senior Certificate examination".

According to the department, the cheating was widespread across the province.

"Of the 95 examination centres that were subjected to the investigative audit, 49 were found to have engaged in one type of irregularity or the other and 46 were cleared."

Umalusi, in conjunction with the department, will be holding back the results from KwaZulu-Natal until a full investigation is completed.
