Durban - A man was seriously wounded in a shooting during an attempted armed robbery in central Pinetown on Tuesday afternoon.
About eight men had been waiting in a white minibus for the owner of the Simunye store on Old Main Road to walk to her parked car with the weekend’s takings.
They rushed out, shooting wildly, hitting a passerby.
“We are not entirely sure what happened, but the shooting started and one man was wounded. The woman carrying the money just ran back inside the shop and took refuge there,” said a police source who cannot be named as he is not authorised to speak to the media.
The gang clambered back into the taxi and drove off, leaving two of the robbers behind, who then ran towards Anderson Street.
“We think it was then, when they had run a fair distance away from the store, that they hijacked a bakkie and fled the scene,” he said.
Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker confirmed that police were on the scene afterwards.
"One victim was shot at by the suspect and the other victim managed to escape unharmed. No arrests have been made at this stage," he said.
