Over 800 000 pupils to write matric exams - dept

Johannesburg - Over 800 000 pupils were expected to write the Grade 12 National Senior Certificate examinations in 2015, the Department of Basic Education (DBE) said on Thursday.

Out of the 801 688 pupils whose exams would start on October 26, 674 232 were full-time candidates and 127 456 part-time, according to figures from the department.

The exams would be written in 6 797 centres throughout the country, and would be overseen by 69 000 invigilators. The exams finish on November 27.

After the tests were written, 49 900 markers in 11 811 marking centres would get to work with their red pens.

"Invigilators who supervise the writing of exams are currently being trained across all Provincial Education Departments (PEDs) and the DBE has conducted standardised training of all officials responsible for the training of invigilators," the department said in a statement.

"The department will monitor the writing of the examinations with the assistance of PEDs and Umalusi. The DBE has in addition to this appointed 81 independent monitors who will be deployed to the districts."
