PE protesters set fire to house, car

2012-06-08 10:33
Port Elizabeth - A house, a car and a construction site were set alight, allegedly by residents of Booysen Park during a service delivery protest, Eastern Cape police said on Friday.

No arrests had been made in relation to the arson by 09:00, Warrant Officer Alwin Labans said.

"The situation is quiet but tense and we are maintaining a police presence in the area," he said.

Community members were starting to form groups, but no violence had been reported since the fires.

Protests in the area began at noon on Thursday, when a local councillor's office was torched and roads were barricaded with logs and rocks.

Two people were arrested for public violence later in the day.
