Passenger of broken-down taxi killed on N3

Durban - A man was killed and another was in a critical condition on Saturday after they were knocked down by multiple vehicles on the N3 in Westville near Durban, paramedics said.

A minibus taxi they were travelling in broke down after 13:00 along the highway and the passengers were milling around the scene, ER24 spokesperson Luyanda Majija said.

"The deceased pedestrian, a male in his 30s, was hit by multiple vehicles in the fast lane.

"The critically injured pedestrian sustained several severe suspected fractures. He was hit by several vehicles in the slow lane."

The injured man was taken to King Edward Hospital for further treatment.

Can someone please explain why any of the passengers were on the roadway and not as far away behind the barrier as possible? Seriously, breaking down is one thing but hanging around near or on the carriageway is madness.

Taxis seem to always stick to the fast lane - no matter the conditions. This vehicle must have broken down and stopped against the centre aisle. Then there is nowhere else to go - but cross the roadway to the verge. The rest is history. Sad, but true.
