Cape Town - The police say that they are investigating a case of arson and murder after two people were shot dead during looting in Langlaagte in Johannesburg.
They said that a group looted a foreign-owned spaza shop in Langlaagte and then set another building alight.
They also say that shots were fired, possibly by the looters, and that two people are dead.
EWN reports that police found one body outside of the looted store, and another in a nearby informal settlement.
According to EWN, police say that the situation across Gauteng remains calm, despite the events in Langlaagte.
The number of people arrested in connection with looting of foreign owned shops in Soweto has risen to 178, national police said on Sunday.
"So far, 178 suspects have been arrested... Six of them are juveniles and have been released into the custody of their parents pending their appearance in court," said Lieutenant General Solomon Makgale.
He said out of the 178 arrested, 83 have already appeared in the Protea Magistrate's Court and their cases have been postponed to 28 and 29 January. They remain in custody.
He said the remaining 95, including the juveniles, would appear in the Kagiso and Protea magistrate's courts on Monday.
Looting swept over parts of Soweto after a teenager was shot dead last Monday, allegedly by a foreign shopkeeper in Snake Park near Dobsonville.
Residents sprang into a revenge attack looting shops belonging to foreigners. This spread to other parts of Soweto and by Thursday it had spilled over to Kagiso in the West Rand and Sebokeng in the Vaal.
