Durban - Police officers came under attack after responding to reports of gunfire at the notorious Glebelands men's hostel in Umlazi on Monday night.
“Our radio control centre received reports of shots fired at the hostel and when the officers arrived they too were shot at,” spokesperson Jay Naicker said.
“The policemen immediately called for reinforcements and things are very chaotic there now. We understand that officers are pursuing several suspects but the information we have at this stage is limited,” Naicker said shortly before 22:00.
A police source, who could not named because he is not authorised to speak to the press, said one man was killed when he was shot in the head.
The Public Order Policing Unit was sent to the scene.
“We are tracing some suspects who fled the scene in several cars and the riot police are also assisting,” he said.
“Things have gotten to a boil in that place now and it is very dangerous,” he added, warning against anyone attempting to go inside without a police escort.
