Durban - Vigilance and a stroke of luck resulted in the arrest of suspected members of a prolific gang of house robbers in the sought after suburb of Sunningdale at the weekend.
Security officers in an unmarked car happened upon the gang as they moved through the area on Saturday night.
Two men were arrested after a high-speed chase, and officers are now working to link the group to a spate of robberies in Durban’s northern region.
According to a statement released by Marshall Security, members of their Special Operations Team (SOT) had been stationed in Sunningdale when they spotted a suspicious-looking red VW Polo.
"The red Polo matched the description of one of the vehicles being used for house robberies and housebreakings. The suspects in the Polo turned into a complex on Village Way and began to exit the vehicle, when they spotted our vehicle and fled.
"A a short chase ensued and the suspects, who were obviously not that familiar with the area, turned into Petal Close, which is a dead end," the security company said.
"The suspects exited the vehicle and attempted to flee on foot. One suspect was immediately arrested by SOT members and the other three fled.
"Our reaction and SOT members chased the suspects and eventually arrested one of them as they were fleeing down the bank on the side of the N2 freeway from Ratoon Hill."
The company said the car used by the gang was found to have been hijacked in Montclair in May. The vehicle also contained housebreaking equipment, including gloves and crowbars, ammunition and a stolen TV taken in a housebreaking just an hour earlier.
"The two suspects and the stolen property were handed over to SAPS Durban North field unit and detectives."
A source with knowledge of the investigation, who could not be named because he was not authorised to speak to the media, said that police were attempting to link the men to a number of robberies in which a vehicle matching theirs had been used.
