Protest over Grabouw school construction jobs

Cape Town - Grabouw business supporters on Thursday blocked access to a school construction site in a picket over allegations that local contractors and sub-contractors were not involved in the R55m project.

"Although a handful of local general labourers have been employed on the site, there will be no benefit for local business and sustainable job creation," Pineview Community Development Organisation chairperson Quinton February said.

A Sapa correspondent reported that the picketers blocked access to the construction site for the new Umyezo wama Apile High School, a project by the Western Cape education department and the provincial department of public works.

A picket line was formed and vehicles parked across Ou Kaapse Weg, one of the main roads leading to Grabouw, preventing construction workers from entering.

"We will not leave or open access to the building site until we have the assurance that Grabouw building contractors will be involved," Elgin Grabouw Civic Organisation chairperson John Michels said.

"Unemployment in Grabouw is a massive problem and we need the work to be done by local contractors so that more jobs can be created."

Police were at the scene.

Construction work began earlier this year after the contract was awarded to Power Construction. The new school was expected to accommodate around 1 300 pupils.

Ai, come on DA, you should have seen that one coming! Remember: "Local is lekker!"

Oh my shattered nerves.... The headoffice of Power Costruction is in Blackheath, Cape Town. Really, a full 47,6 km from Grabouw. How local do they want to go? Do they thing that Power construction will now cart in a truckload full of labourers from the North West province to do the work? And I don't exactly see Grabouw brimming with companies like the Power Group that has the capacity to complete a project of this magnitude.

Grabouw contractors and subcontractors don't have friends in high places. It's who you know not what you know that counts in this country.

Finally some community have finally seen and correctly acted accordingly. We are facing the similar problem here in Lwandle - Strand with Basil Read. As I write this comment the project manager decided to halt all construction citing alleged intimidation when he was addressed by local reps. This is what big cimpanies do. They offer sub-contracts to outsiders as far as Kraaifontein leaving many local commumity contractors with complete papers. How and when we small constructors ever grow in terms of CIDB grading? Funny though white chaps get the contracts and then turn and hire us blacks to do the job but they claim we do not have the skills to execute. How hypocrite is that!
