Durban - Police seized heroin with a street value of more than R7m at an upmarket home in Ramsgate on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said that in addition to the seizure of heroin, 10 people between the ages of 22 and 29 were arrested.
He said: “After months of intense investigation by the Hawks, they uncovered a drug syndicate operating in Ramsgate. During the investigation it was discovered it was a Durban-based syndicate which had moved to South Coast.”
He said the Hawks, assisted by the police’s National Intervention Unit, raided the Ramsgate house and recovered about 120 000 readily packed straws of heroin and eight kilograms of unpacked heroin to the value of more than R7m.
“The house was found to be a processing and packaging clandestine laboratory,” he said.
Zwane said that the 10 were expected to appear in court later on Wednesday.
National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said she could not immediately confirm if the 10 had appeared.
