Ramaphosa to testify at Farlam Commission

Johannesburg - Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa will testify at the Farlam Commission of Inquiry into the Marikana shootings in Pretoria on Monday.

Dali Mpofu SC for the mineworkers, said during the public hearings in July, that Ramaphosa, a Lonmin shareholder, used former police minister Nathi Mthethwa to exert political pressure on the police to act against the protesting Marikana miners.

"You were the intermediary, the conduit, through which the pressure Mr Ramaphosa refers to was conveyed to the senior management of police and ultimately to the officers who killed people," Mpofu said while cross-examining Mthethwa at the inquiry at the time.

The advocate read out an e-mail penned by Ramaphosa, as a Lonmin shareholder, to fellow board members: "I have just had a discussion with Susan Shabangu [then minister of mining]. She agrees that [what] we are going through is not a labour dispute but a criminal act.

"She will correct her characterisation of what we are experiencing. She is going into cabinet and will brief the president as well and get Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa to act in a pointed way. Let us [apply] the pressure on them to act correctly."

The commission is investigating the deaths of 44 people during strike-related violence at Lonmin's platinum mining operations at Marikana in August 2012.

Thirty-four people, mostly striking mineworkers, were shot dead in a clash with police, over 70 were wounded, and over 250 arrested on 16 August 2012. Police were apparently trying to disarm and disperse them.

In the preceding week, 10 people, including two policemen and the two Lonmin security guards, were killed.

I believe Cyril has all the characters that make a good president, just like most of our leaders he too has skeletons in his closets. I believe the thing to do it is own up that costly error & just apologize rather than playing tricks that would tarnish his good image. I hope when you become a president in 4 years you won't commit such blunders again

We have been waiting for years for the truth, but none will be provided. What we will see from Mr Ramaphosa today is only politics, thats what have been the drive of this commision. The thing is its going to be ANC against EFF... There have been so many mistakes found against our police force, but people just dont see because they feel that what ever is done by the police and the greedy big fishes is correct...

Is it not true that Marikana was more about Amcu muscling their way into Num territory? B4 that shooting have u ever heard of 10 ppl being killed during protests? What abt the killings of shop stewards 4rm both sides? Is that not criminal? Ramaphosa said nothing wrong, in my opinion.

A criminal act is when armed peoples engages themselves in an unprotected or illegal strike and kill innocent peoples in the process.Police officers had to use force proportionate to the circumstance.

He is a very rich man and maybe he probably didn't give a damn about the poor miners. Remember rich people live, party, school, and play together and marry and screw each other. They are never connected to the poor
