Ramaphosa won't respond to demands he face charges for Marikana

Johannesburg - Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa will not respond to demands that he face criminal charges for his alleged role in the deaths at Marikana, the presidency said on Thursday.

"We wish to state that in respect of the findings of the Farlam Commission related to Deputy President Ramaphosa personally, the commission's findings are clear. Accordingly, Deputy President Ramaphosa has nothing further to add," spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa said in a statement.

The Economic Freedom Fighters said on Thursday that Ramaphosa had a hand in the decisions taken on August 16 2012, when police shot dead 34 mineworkers.

It intended laying charges against him and then police minister Nathi Mthethwa in Marikana on Friday.

The report of the Farlam Commission of Inquiry, released on June 25, cleared Ramaphosa of any involvement in the deaths and violence at Lonmin's Marikana mine in August 2012.

"The commission is of the view that it cannot be said that Mr Ramaphosa was the 'cause of the massacre'," the report states.
